Feb 15,  · One Flight Up is a masterpiece. It was recorded in Paris in The three tracks on this LP are very intense and have the same dark feeling as Miles Davis' soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l'echafaud, which was recorded in Paris as well, though almost seven years earlier. The black and white LP cover matches this dark mood perfectly/5(15). Reply

Dexter Gordon albums from the late fifties and sixties tended to be all of a kind: Dexter, alone or with one or two additional horns, and rhythm section, playing straight ahead bop –all the parts in place but nothing too cerebral, and certainly not a lot of time spent on arranging/5(83). Reply

Reception. The Allmusic review by Michael G. Nastos awarded the album 3½ stars stating "One Flight Up stands as a testament to Dexter Gordon's viability as a bandleader and teammate, while his individualism is somewhat sublimated. It's a good listen to digest all the way through, especially if you are as patient as the performers, who have a lot to say".Genre: Jazz. Reply

Leonard Feather’s original album liner notes for “One Flight Up” refer to a round table discussion for “Down Beat” in in which Dexter Gordon and Kenny Drew (who plays piano on the album) talk about the advantages of being expatriates. Dexter had left the US in to take up a permanent residency at the Montmatre Club in Copenhagen. Reply
